In Favor of Independent Bookstores

Many of us have been raised to look for bargains, taught that finding the cheapest price for something is a good deal. What it has taken me longer to learn is that everything comes with a price, including purported bargains. When we make purchases on line, often it's because of lower prices. Yet, in the process, we play a part in the decline of our very own communities. Businesses that only operate on-line are quite likely not paying taxes in your state, nor are they providing employment for your neighbours or your family. The next time a local charity asks for donations, notice which businesses make contributions; usually it's the ones where the owners live in your town.

I've temporarily relocated to northern California, where I'm writing another novel and working at an independent bookstore. It's where I've come to know many of the local residents -- everyone from recently born babies being exposed to their first books to elderly people grateful for large print versions of their favorite authors. We share wonderful discussions and introduce each other to good reads. The store is a microcosm of the town and a place where people gather; without it, the town would be lesser.

I urge you, when you make your next book purchase, to do so at an independent bookstore. It will help support the wellbeing of your community.
